Why does my electric scooter only go in mode 1?
This is more common than you think, and in most cases, it’s a safety feature that got triggered. Mode 1 is the lowest speed setting on your scooter (limited to 6 km/h on sidewalks under Maringá Municipal Law 11.981/2025).
If the display shows a top speed of 20 km/h but the scooter won’t exceed 6 km/h, it’s not a battery issue—it’s an active lock. Let’s go over the causes.
1. Speed lock activated accidentally
Many Foston, Bee Green, and Panda models have a beginner safety mode. Check your manual: it’s usually a sequence of buttons or a combination of keys that locks you into “mode 1.”
Hold the brake + power button for 5 seconds, or check the display settings. In 80% of cases, that’s all it is.
2. Throttle failure (acceleration lever)
If the throttle is dirty or corroded, the electrical signal only arrives partially. The controller interprets this as light acceleration and limits you to mode 1.
Test: turn the scooter off and then activate mode 3 (if available). If you’re still stuck at 6 km/h, the problem is the throttle.
3. Low battery or damaged cell
When the battery is low, the BMS (battery management system) limits power to protect the cells. This is common on scooters older than 2 years.
Note: if the issue only happens below 30% charge, it’s the battery. Typical range is 20–40 km, so degradation first shows on hills.
4. Tilt sensor triggered (or handlebar angle)
Electric scooters have a tilt sensor to prevent acceleration while on the kickstand. If the handlebar stem was rotated out of its ideal angle, the sensor thinks it’s “lifted.”
Set the handlebar back to a perpendicular position. This often happens after a fall or during transport.
5. “School” learning mode activated
On the Foston line, the school mode (6 km/h) can be accidentally turned on in entry-level models. To disable: with the scooter on, hold the throttle for 3 seconds + pump the brake.
Check your brand’s manual (Foston, Bee Green, Panda, or Goo)—the exact sequence varies, but that’s the general idea.
6. Controller (board/plate) issue
If none of the tests above worked, the controller may have a burned component. This limits the throttle signal to minimum level.

Important: if your scooter is limited to 6 km/h, it likely complies with the municipal law. But if you want to unlock the factory power (up to 32 km/h under CONTRAN Resolution 996/2023), the adjustment is simple—provided the manufacturer allows it.
Use ONLY on bike lanes and roads with speed limits up to 40 km/h, always wearing a helmet (mandatory in Maringá).
